Farm Forward is part of a diverse coalition of farmers, activists, communities, and consumers building the public and political will to end factory farming. We are working toward a society that phases out industrial animal farming in favor of holistic, biodiverse farming that is better for people, animals, the climate and environment, and drastically lowers our risk for future zoonoses and pandemics.
To defeat factory farming, we need every tool in the toolbox—to reduce meat consumption, develop new appealing protein products from plants and cellular technology, expand highest welfare farming, and more. No one strategy will satisfy all diners. While some institutions and consumers will be willing to reduce meat consumption, for example, others will only make the switch once there are animal meat alternatives they consider delicious and affordable; still others will remain committed to consuming farmed animals. Therefore, all of these strategies need to be pursued simultaneously, as no one strategy will be the sole silver bullet that will end factory farming.
Farm Forward works for systemic welfare reforms for factory farmed animals while also supporting solutions that will supplant factory farming. To vanquish factory farming we need a higher welfare, more sustainable animal agriculture that can avoid being incredibly cruel, like the current poultry industry, or incredibly climate intensive, like most beef production. In the US, we support highest welfare animal agriculture, where genetically healthy animals are raised on pasture, and not only escape needless suffering but have lives worth living. In India, where factory farming increasingly encroaches on traditional high welfare animal farming, we support veterinary care for small high welfare farms to keep them competitive with industrial agriculture. We are also committed to confronting racism and systemic oppression as we work to build a just society and an equitable economy, where workers across the food chain have safe, dignified jobs. We are planting the seeds for a thriving, connected food system that honors the independent lives of humans and animals.
Farm Forward works in coalition with organizations supporting all of these strategies, working in partnership to build a future free of factory farms.

Institutional food policies shift food consumption patterns on a much larger scale than outreach to individual consumers. Legislative policy has the power to protect animal welfare, the environment, and worker rights. Farm Forward has a long and deep history of supporting the policies that help institutions and society shift away from factory farming.
